Currently starting my ninth year as a Razorback!

I am originally from Mexico City, where I earned my undergraduate degree in economics from Monterrey TEC. I came to the University of Arkansas in 2003 as an assistant professor in economics in the Sam M. Walton College of Business, after completing my Ph.D. degree in economics at Texas A&M University.

I was promoted to associate professor with tenure in 2009, and I became the Honors Program director for the Walton College during the same year. A year later I was asked to be a part of the dean’s office in Walton as an associate dean for Undergraduate Studies, a position that I enjoyed until Provost Gaber asked me to be a part of her team as Vice Provost for Distance Education.

Annual Report 2011-2012

Welcome from the Vice Provost

I am Javier Reyes, Vice Provost for Distance Education, and on behalf of everyone in the Global Campus, I want to welcome you and thank you for visiting our site.

These are very exciting times for our university and higher education in general, not only in our state but across the nation and the world. Technology has progressed in such a way that now it blends seamlessly with almost every aspect of our lives.  Education as a field is no exception. Technology is providing us with different ways to interact with our students, for students to access information, and for faculty to present concepts and provide different experiential learning through online venues. These include discussion boards, compressed videos, and interactive lectures, among others.

Our field is not necessarily changing; we are simply adding another platform through which we can deliver the top quality education programs that our university has to offer.

On July 1, 2012, Chancellor G. David Gearhart and Provost Sharon Gaber initiated the administrative realignment of the Global Campus and tapped me to lead our unit. This marked the beginning of a new era for the Global Campus and its academic mission.

We are excited about the future of the University of Arkansas and the role distance education will play. Through the coming months you will see big changes in our website and our connectivity with faculty and students, as well as with outside constituents.

I invite you to come and visit us often. As technology evolves and moves us forward, new opportunities to integrate technology into education become available as well. We plan to roll out a blog that will keep you up to date on our efforts and our projects.  We also seek input from all of you as we find ways to innovate and revolutionize all aspects of online education.

We are here to work for our students, our faculty and everyone who wants to be a part of moving forward with the You of A!

Under this new structure the Global Campus will…

Support the colleges, schools and the academic departments to ensure that the expansion of online/distance education offerings do not come at the expense of their efforts in our face-to-face courses. We have to be strategic and ensure that our university resources are used fully and optimally, balancing all modes of instruction delivery. Making sure that the academic standards, the brand, and the reputation of all our programs continues on the positive trajectory it currently is as we work toward the objective of becoming a Top 50 University.
Work closely with faculty – the content experts, the academic leaders of our institution, and the ones who are pushing the frontiers with their research – in such a way that they will be guiding our efforts as we expand our online academic offerings while maintaining the rigorous, robust academic standards expected from the state’s flagship institution.
Make sure that the resources are aligned in such a way that our faculty expertise, our academic reputation, and our technology are combined creatively and optimally to bring the University of Arkansas to students who need flexible options to overcome barriers, such as location and time.
